John Degenhart was a
skilled glassworker in the early part of the 20th
century. During the time that he was employed at
the Cambridge Glass Company of Cambridge, Ohio,
he made paperweights after hours, not an
uncommon practice at the time when paperweights
were considered a novelty item. Eventually, he
opened his own factory called Crystal Art Glass
Company. He made a large number of different
types of paperweights including footed roses,
fragment weights, plaque weights and paperweighst
with all sorts of small animals and insects. The
"window" weight is probably one of Degenhart's
nicest and most sought after
paperweights.
