English Bottle Glass
Paperweights aka "Dump." Early in the 19th
century and possibly into the beginning of the
20th, this type of paperweight was made in the
central parts of England where there were many
glass factories producing bottles. The name
"dump" is applied as it was thought they were made
of glass that was to be dumped at the end of the
work day. The glass appears green because of the
many impurities in the bottle glass that was
used. Since they were readily available, they
were reputed to have been used (and abused) as
door stops and liners for garden paths. This folk
art form has become appreciated and treasured over
the
years.
