South Jersey (New
Jersey) paperweights are an American innovation
and differ from the traditional type of
paperweights with millefiori or lampwork designs
that had been made starting in the mid nineteenth
century. The types of paperweights made in South
Jersey, which also includes frit pick-up weights
and crimp flowers, are unique, original and can be
considered as "folk art." They were made in the
last half of the 19th century until about
1910.
